- The history of oil and gas in the Barents Sea
- Hammerfest LNG at Melkøya first came into use in 2007 - 26 years after gas was first discovered on the Tromsø Patch. Now Europe's first plant for the production of liquid natural gas is fully operational, with a capacity of 5.7 billion Sm3 of gas and 680,000 tons of LPG and condensate a year.
With this plant, the Barents Sea is now established as a new petroleum producing province and Norway has become a member of the exclusive club that has mastered cryogenic technologie. With its world record in multi-phase pipeline transport and other bold solutions; Hammerfest LNG represents a leap into the future. This plant is the first step on the path to the long-term, eco-friendly and profitable exploitation of the resources in the Arctic.
